Making Every Minute Count on the Field with Grassroots team selection.

About Grassroots-teamselection.
At Grassroots team selection, we are dedicated to promoting fair playing time for all squad members.

With this in mind, our spreadsheet helps to ensure that no player is forgotten, and the squad enjoys a fair share of pitch time.

Just as importantly for the coaches, our spreadsheet helps to limit the confusion, stress, and time out of selecting your team.

Introduction

As a new volunteer assistant coach I’ve experienced the stress of trying to live by the code of “Fair playing time for each squad member”. Saying it and doing it, I’ve learned, are at 2 different levels of difficulty. Having tried various methods from “winging it” to writing each players name x 4 onto pieces of paper, creating formations with them, then adding up the amount of each players names to ensure some level of fairness, I have developed this spreadsheet intended to be used, either on a laptop before leaving the house, or on your phone pitchside. It is an absolute Godsend. It saves me time, brain power, and more importantly it helps keep pre-match stress to a minimum.

Ease of Use

Ease of Use

This spreadsheet works simply with the coach inputting numbers 1-7 next to players names for each quarter. Each number represents a position. This gives an extremely easy visual to work off. The “Game time” column, which you will input, helps to show how many quarters each player will play as a quick reference. Click "Learn More" to be redirected to our short Youtube clip.

Guidance

No more scribbling on notebooks, worrying because the number of players won’t go into 7 as easily as you had hoped, or having to constantly adopt rolling subs. There is a guide of how to plan your subs depending on your attendance (up to 12 players) letting you know how much playing time each player has and how to break down the substitution, both WITH and WITHOUT a dedicated Goalkeeper . From there, it is easy to count playing time for the whole match, and includes a large comment box for notes.

For now, as this has been developed for our own use, we only have a 7 a-side version with a 1-2-3-1 formation.
This will likely progress into 9v9 with multiple formations as we are heading into U11 next season.

The spreadsheet has been developed to strike a balance between fair playing time for all, and least disruption through minimal substitutions.

An example -

Squad of 12 playing 7v7 with a dedicated goalkeeper -
Goalkeeper - Full Match
Outfield players will get 2 quarters on the pitch, with 4 players getting 2.5 quarters.

Only 2 substitutions have to be made to achieve this, allowing your players time to form partnerships during the match, and gives you more time to watch, enjoy, and coach!
